Payton Tolle’s Immaculate Inning Highlights Red Sox Victory

Boston Red Sox rookie left-hander Payton Tolle achieved an impressive feat against the Kansas City Royals on Sunday, completing an immaculate inning. In a rain-delayed start at Fenway Park, Tolle, known for his distinct mustache, struck out the top of the Royals’ lineup with just nine pitches.

The 23-year-old focused on the strike zone, delivering eight four-seam fastballs and one sinker. The Fenway crowd watched as he struck out Jac Caglianone to seal the immaculate inning, which marked the 125th in MLB history. It was the first for the Red Sox since Chris Sale in 2021 and the first in an opening inning since Pedro Martinez achieved it against Seattle in 2002.

Tolle’s performance was noteworthy, as he pitched six shutout innings, allowing only four hits and one walk while striking out seven batters on 96 pitches. His outstanding effort contributed to a 4-1 victory for Boston.

This game added to Tolle’s rookie season total of 166 strikeouts, placing him second in Red Sox history behind Daisuke Matsuzaka’s 201 in 2007. The rookie recently criticized the modern trend of limiting starting pitchers’ workloads. Tolle expressed his preference for longer outings, stating, “I grew up thinking that a starter needs to go as long as possible every time… every time I go out there, I want to throw a complete game. It’s a special thing that is being lost in today’s game.”
