Chicago Bears’ Potential Move to Indiana: A Closer Look

As the Chicago Bears prepare for their 2026 home opener against the Minnesota Vikings, it marks their 55th season at Soldier Field, which might be their last there. The team announced plans for stadium development across state lines in Hammond, Indiana, reflecting a serious consideration not seen since similar discussions in the late 1990s.

Why Hammond Could Be the Future Home for the Bears

Hammond’s preparations for becoming the potential site of the new Bears’ stadium started years ago. Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. expressed surprise that these efforts may transition into hosting a major sports team. Hammond cleaned up and developed potential sites like the Lost Marsh and Lake Terminal areas while considering Indiana’s favorable property tax laws compared to Illinois.

“Another thing that Indiana did to prepare for this day was there’s a gap from one side of the state line to the other in what it costs to run a household, what it costs to run a business, and in Indiana, we enshrine tax caps, property tax caps, into our constitution,” said McDermott.

Indiana’s tax certainty is appealing for the Bears, especially compared to fluctuating Illinois property taxes.

Infrastructure and Cooperation Are Key

Infrastructure readiness is crucial for such a project. Hammond is positioned well to serve as a new Bears’ home thanks to its extensive utility and transportation infrastructure. There’s also cooperation across political lines and levels of government.

“I’ve never seen coordination across federal, state, bipartisan, Republican and Democratic lines, everybody working in lockstep,” McDermott noted, highlighting alliances crucial to a deal of this magnitude.

Indiana’s infrastructure already accommodates heavy usages due to its proximity to Lake Michigan. In contrast, locations like Arlington Heights might face more infrastructure hurdles.

Bipartisan Efforts and Growth Potential

The potential stadium deal has bipartisan support and regional significance. Indiana House Speaker Todd Huston emphasized the transformative economic impacts of hosting the Bears:

“This project would be a transformational opportunity for Northwest Indiana. It would deliver lasting benefits across the region and our entire state,” Huston stated.

Significant developments like these promise substantial growth for jobs, businesses, and statewide investment.

Commitment to the Brand

Despite a potential move, the Chicago Bears will retain their historic name. “We will be the Chicago Bears whether we’re in Arlington or whether we’re in Hammond,” Bears chairman George McCaskey affirmed. Hammond, often thought of as Colts territory, is proven Bears country.

Current Status of Negotiations

The Bears recently demonstrated strong performance, sparking analogies of being in the “red zone” regarding negotiations. While optimism remains high, McDermott admitted the final decision lies with Bears management.

“The ball is 100% in their court,” McDermott acknowledged, understanding that the Bears require plenty of reassurance before committing to such an enormous change.

Heather Ennis of the Northwest Indiana Forum remained optimistic about the Bears’ interest in the region, highlighting cooperation efforts to make this investment effective.
