The Indianapolis Colts find themselves winless entering Week 3 following defeats by the Baltimore Ravens and the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs game proved particularly challenging. The Colts suffered a narrow overtime loss and saw key offensive player Alec Pierce sustain a left heel injury.
Pierce’s injury is troublesome as it affects the same heel he had surgery on this offseason. He missed most of the training camp due to this. Despite Pierce leaving the game early in the second quarter, the Colts managed to compete closely without him. However, his long-term absence could impact the team’s prospects.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Pierce will aim to rehab rather than undergo surgery. This approach means he will be out for several weeks. If his recovery shows progress without setbacks, he might return midseason. The Colts may still consider placing him on Injured Reserve (IR) during his recovery. In case his condition worsens, surgery remains an option.
A Setback for Alec Pierce
This development is a significant setback for Pierce. He recently signed a four-year, $114 million extension with the Colts. This contract followed Indianapolis parting ways with Michael Pittman Jr., making Pierce the team’s top wide receiver. Last season, Pierce delivered a stellar performance with 47 receptions for 1,003 yards and six touchdowns in 15 games. His average of 21.3 yards per catch led the team in receiving yards.
The Colts had high hopes for Pierce to build on this success. With his projected absence, the team will need to adjust significantly. Tight end Tyler Warren and receivers Josh Downs, Keenan Allen, and Darius Slayton are expected to see more targets as they step up in his absence.
