Kaptur, seeking reelection in Ohio’s 9th District, an area that supported Trump in 2024, stated, “I voted with Republicans to keep transgender ideology out of our schools because parents know what’s best for our kids. Boys should not play in girls’ sports. Don’t let them change the subject.”

GLAAD criticizes the term “transgender ideology” as a harmful concept. Despite her stance, Kaptur has supported LGBTQ+ rights, backing the Equality Act and promoting Trans Day of Visibility in a 2021 post.

Other Democrats focus on sports and locker room issues without extending to other antidiscrimination measures. Progressive members express concern over this shift, as moderates align more closely with Republican rhetoric.

In Iowa, several Democrats referenced transgender athletes in statements and ads. House candidates used softer language, avoiding specific mentions of the transgender community. Sarah Trone Garriott and Lindsay James emphasized fairness in sports and parental authority.

Polls indicate that most Americans prefer transgender athletes to play on teams that align with their assigned sex at birth. A YouGov poll revealed that 57% support restrictions, with only 20% opposing. Many, however, back antidiscrimination measures regarding transgender rights.
