RNC Files Lawsuit for Transparency in New Jersey’s Voter Roll Maintenance

Republican National Committee Actions: The Republican National Committee (RNC) and state GOP leaders initiated legal proceedings against New Jersey’s election authorities and five counties. They contend these entities have neglected to provide federally required voter roll maintenance records. Their aim is to enforce transparency regarding voter registration practices.

The lawsuit accuses New Jersey’s chief election official and authorities in Bergen, Hudson, Middlesex, Somerset, and Union counties of withholding crucial documentation. This follows the discovery by the RNC of noncitizens appearing on New Jersey’s voter rolls.

“The RNC exposed noncitizens on New Jersey’s voter rolls. Election officials are hiding the records that would tell voters how it happened. The RNC won’t stand for it,” stated RNC Chairman Joe Gruters.

While some documents have been released, significant records remain unrevealed. The RNC insists on transparency and accountability from election officials.

Discovery and Investigations: Initial investigations revealed hundreds of noncitizens registered to vote. Some individuals seeking U.S. citizenship had previously admitted to being noncitizens while having participated in elections. Investigations into jury duty evasion have also uncovered instances of noncitizens registering to vote.

The RNC has challenged these practices through multiple legal avenues. They previously filed lawsuits against New Jersey’s secretary of state in relation to unlawful voting by nonresidents and noncitizens.

Responses and Political Context: New Jersey Democratic Governor Mikie Sherrill acknowledged the presence of illegal voter registrations. Republicans argue that Democratic officials have evaded responsibility for clarifying how these discrepancies came to occur.

RNC legal notices have been issued to demand records and facts concerning voter registration failures. In particular, the lawsuit pushes for the examination of how registrations were made and whether all ineligible voters have been removed.

Broader Campaign and Legal Context: This challenge forms a part of the RNC’s extensive campaign to ensure election integrity ahead of upcoming elections. Similar requests for maintenance records have been sent to 48 states to verify the accuracy of voting registries nationwide.

The lawsuit has garnered congressional interest, with lawmakers seeking explanations for the voter registration failures and omitted records. In addition, Republican figures such as Rep. Tom Kean Jr. and New Jersey Senate Republican Leader Anthony Bucco have joined as plaintiffs, advocating for transparency and public accountability.
