Rev. Brian Konkol’s Inauguration as Valparaiso University’s 20th President

The Reverend Brian Konkol was inaugurated as the 20th president of Valparaiso University, highlighting the importance of character and faith in education. During the ceremony in the Chapel of the Resurrection on September 25, 2026, he addressed students, staff, alumni, and colleagues.

Konkol emphasized the value of eulogies over resumes, underscoring the need for graduates with moral integrity. He stated that Valparaiso graduates seek more than entry-level jobs; they aim to make a positive impact.

He spoke about nurturing personal responsibility and community service, aiming to develop ‘connectors in a connected world.’ Konkol reflected on the historic roots of the Lutheran tradition, comparing the influence of the printing press to modern search engines and AI.

Jon Steinbrecher, the board’s chair, conducted the investiture, reinforcing the significance of leadership grounded in tradition and forward-thinking.

Konkol shared thoughts on the purpose of education and life, resonating with Martin Luther’s perspective that every person is loved by God. He linked this belief to Valpo’s mission to cultivate lives for good in today’s world.

Facing societal questions, he called for actions that advance humanity rather than regress. Input from the university community informed his vision for education that integrates practical life skills and ethics.

Valparaiso University, managed by the Lutheran University Association since 1925, aims to enhance its religious roots while broadening its influence. Konkol urged openness about Valpo’s achievements to inspire and guide others.

Matt Wells, a Valpo graduate, and other notable figures expressed support for Konkol’s leadership. His prior role at Syracuse University demonstrated his ability to bridge diverse communities.

City Mayor Jon Costas, a VU alumnus, praised Konkol’s dedication, essential for the university’s thriving future. Recognizing the importance of returning to its roots, VU aims to grow under Konkol’s enthusiastic leadership.
