Texas Delivery Driver’s Struggle Gains Public Attention

An unexpected encounter with an elderly delivery driver in Texas has drawn widespread attention due to the reason behind his continued work. Donald Johnson, 81, was spotted delivering lost luggage to a home and struggling to carry a heavy bag up a steep set of stairs. This moment was captured by a doorbell camera at The Colony residence, according to reports.

Erin Howell, the resident, went outside to assist him and learned that Johnson had been working as an independent contractor for three years. His goal was to cover medical expenses for his wife, Josephine Johnson, who is battling cancer, as reported by FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth.

The couple has been married for 57 years, and Donald Johnson continued working through his wife’s medical treatment. He struggled to find other employment, as he shared with Howell during their interaction. Johnson remarked, “It’s the only job that will hire me,” according to the outlet.

Howell posted the story online, initiating a fundraiser to aid with medical expenses and provide Johnson with the chance to retire and care for his wife.

As the story reached more people, thousands offered donations and messages of support. Johnson expressed gratitude, saying, “I think I’m going to be able to stop working, and that’s amazing.” He continued, “So we’re not quite totally over the hump yet, but we’re getting there very quickly.” His wife Josephine felt uplifted by the support and prayers, saying, “I can face it. I think that’s the big difference. Some have made comments and they’re praying for us. And it’s a joyful feeling.”

Nevertheless, the fundraiser faced a setback after it was removed from GoFundMe. Their daughter, Amy Johnson, revealed in a TikTok video that although the campaign raised over $700,000, the funds would not be received due to “a technicality.” The funds raised were intended to assist with her mother’s medical expenses and allow her father to retire.

GoFundMe informed FOX 4 that its trust and safety team determined the fundraiser violated its terms of service. However, specific details for this decision were not disclosed. The company emphasized policies requiring “authenticity and transparency for donors.”
