The Auburn Tigers have a new wide receiver, Tray Taylor, who is attracting attention not for his skills on the field, but for his size. Having transferred from Coastal Carolina and Troy, Taylor is now part of the Auburn squad. Senior writer Jeff Shearer at AuburnTigers.com shared video footage showing Taylor in action during fall camp.
Sports Reference lists Taylor at 5-foot-8 and 160 pounds, but Auburn’s records show him at 5-foot-6 and 150 pounds. This discrepancy aligns with his appearance on the field, sparking discussions on social media. Fans have made light-hearted comments, including @WilliiamHBonney stating, “Thought this was a coaches son practicing for fun,” and @tracey_lynnee calling him “Mighty mouse!”
Despite his smaller stature, Taylor has a strong record. At Troy last season, he caught 30 passes for nearly 500 yards and scored three touchdowns. He also ran the ball on 10 occasions, gaining 52 yards and adding another touchdown. At Coastal Carolina, he gained experience as a return specialist.
Taylor earned his opportunity at Auburn after being a second-team JUCO All-American in 2023. During his time at Tyler Junior College, he caught 39 passes for 850 yards and scored nine touchdowns, according to Peter Rauterkus of AL.com.
Following the dismissal of wide receiver Duke Smith due to a team rules violation, Auburn seeks to redefine its team dynamics under the leadership of new coach Alex Golesh. According to Rauterkus, “If nothing else, Taylor adds depth in practice.” With Cam Coleman transferring to the Texas Longhorns, the team needs contributors more than ever.
Auburn’s wide receiver roster remains competitive, but Taylor’s past performance suggests he can deliver for the Tigers. His journey from junior college to the top echelons of college football might culminate in a memorable college career at Auburn.
