After recovering from a broken ankle in spring 2025, Owen Bohren made a strong comeback to Lincoln-Way East’s lineup. Despite missing the start of the season, he netted 10 goals last fall, though he struggled to regain his old form at first. “It feels great because I can just play to my fullest ability,” Bohren stated. “I don’t have to worry about anything happening again.” Now fully healed, Bohren is performing at his peak.
Bohren, committed to Rhode Island, has shown consistent productivity throughout the season for the Griffins. On Monday night, his two goals led the team to a 4-1 victory over Lockport in the SouthWest Suburban Conference. This win ended a five-game losing streak for Lincoln-Way East, which stands at 11-7 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Charles Lungaro and Jacob Broderick each scored once, with Mateo Espinosa giving two assists. Jacen Winefka secured seven saves for the team.
“It was very important to have a win in this game,” Bohren emphasized. “After five losses in a row, morale was low, but we worked hard in practice, kept our heads high.” He emphasized the importance of resilience following setbacks. Caleb Trabado scored for Lockport from a Sebastian Pakos assist, bringing their record to 9-5-1 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
Bohren’s first goal came in the 11th minute, sprinting through Lockport’s defense. He scored again in the final minute, marking his 13th goal of the season. Lincoln-Way East coach Matt Ribbens praised Bohren’s dynamic play. “The little things he does sometimes don’t make sense, and then he explodes,” Ribbens commented. Gabe Sikon, Lockport’s goalkeeper, managed to block one of Bohren’s attempts during the match.
Senior forward Lungaro highlighted Bohren’s leadership. “He’s a great leader with a good attitude,” Lungaro said. Bohren’s hunger and determination after his injury are evident to Ribbens. “He wanted it more and started leading,” Ribbens observed.
Bohren’s passion for soccer originated in childhood, influenced by his father, Phillip, who played in Switzerland. “It’s been in my family,” Bohren shared. “I’ve been playing as long as I can remember.” His commitment to Rhode Island represents a significant achievement, despite the hurdles post-injury. Bohren follows in Ribbens’ footsteps, who also played at Rhode Island.
“It’s a really fun thing for coach and me,” Bohren reflected on their shared connection. “Playing Division I soccer has been a goal since I started high school.” Now, Bohren feels accomplished, with opportunities that align with his aspirations.
