Church’s Support for Israel Targeted: Flags Vandalized and Threats Received

A church in McKinney, Texas, intended to show solidarity with Israel by displaying a striking array of Israeli flags. This act was part of a larger commemoration of the tragic Hamas attack on Israel that occurred on October 7, 2023, claiming roughly 1,200 lives.

Senior Pastor Len McLaughlin of Heritage Church took the initiative of placing 1,200 small Israeli flags around the church property to honor those who had perished in the attack by the militant group. McLaughlin stated, “We feel it is biblical and deeply spiritual to be a church that supports Israel… We feel it is important to take a moment to remember those folks, and in their memory, we put the flags up.”

However, this symbolic gesture encountered hostility when McLaughlin arrived at the church on Tuesday morning to find hundreds of flags uprooted and thrown into piles. He commented on the incident, saying, “They pulled all of them up and stomped all them into the ground, really just showed total disrespect… They came in the darkness of night. They’re cowards who did this. They’re not patriots.”

The pastor has since filed a police report on the vandalism. Despite the incident, McLaughlin was heartened by community support, noting that several individuals, including employees from a nearby veterinary clinic, came to help restore the display of flags. The support from local residents further bolstered the church’s spirit amidst adversity.

Russ Mortenson, a local resident, expressed disbelief over the vandalism, remarking, “It’s beyond belief… It’s hard for me to understand that. I found them to be very impressive and hopefully meaningful.” Additionally, the church has reported receiving threats related to the flag exhibit.

The display has now been restored, and the church plans to bolster its security measures. McLaughlin emphasized the need for accountability, stating, “I wouldn’t want anybody to go to jail over it, but I certainly would like for them to be fined and treated as criminals because what they did was criminal.”
