Contentious Race in Pennsylvania’s 10th District Heats Up

59 minutes ago 0

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has criticized Democrat Janelle Stelson amid a contentious race for Pennsylvania’s 10th Congressional District. Recent polling indicates Stelson might be challenging GOP Representative Scott Perry, making the seat highly competitive.

This week, DHS released a statement accusing Stelson’s campaign of employing an undocumented immigrant, identified as Chimaobim Adedayo Igbojekwe, who allegedly engaged in disorderly conduct. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested Igbojekwe on October 1 following his guilty plea to the charge. ICE Deputy Director Charles Wall condemned Stelson for employing Igbojekwe, who admitted to carrying campaign materials at the time of his arrest.

DHS revealed that Igbojekwe was allowed into the U.S. lawfully in 2017, but stayed beyond his permit’s expiration in 2019. He received deferred action by the Biden administration in September 2021. Stelson’s campaign denied having any connection with the individual, stating no prior knowledge of him and disclosing that campaign finance records showed no payments made to him.

Political Climate and Competitive Race

The Pennsylvania 10th District has historically trended Republican but has become more competitive. Stelson narrowly lost to Perry in 2024, a tight race that remains fiercely contested. This district is currently viewed as a prime target for Democrats hoping to reclaim House control.

Polling suggests Stelson gaining momentum. A Franklin & Marshall College poll in September found her leading Perry 47% to 44%. Additionally, an internal poll from Normington, Petts & Associates in April placed her ahead, 51% to 45%. The Cook Political Report shifted its race rating to ‘Leans Democratic’, citing Stelson’s polling advantage.

DHS Statement Controversy

DHS’s statement prompted backlash, with the organization Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filing a complaint, claiming it violated the Hatch Act. Opposition argues the statement represents an improper political stance.

Perry demanded clarity on Stelson’s ties to Igbojekwe, criticizing her response through her campaign manager as insufficient. Meanwhile, Stelson connects Perry with former President Trump, who has low popularity in the district. Perry reciprocates by linking Stelson to the Democratic Socialist faction, attempting to sway the district’s Republican leanings.

Voter Sentiment and Key Issues

The race in Pennsylvania’s 10th District remains tightly matched with both candidates attempting to appeal to undecided voters. Affordability and data centers are among significant issues for local voters. Upcoming weeks will determine the voters’ final stance, as they prepare for the midterms.

The Path Forward

This election cycle, Pennsylvania’s 10th District is a barometer for national political trends. Registration ends on October 19, with mail-in ballot requests due October 27. Both campaigns will heighten efforts to energize voters and address critical concerns.
