Federal Judge Criticizes Trump Administration for Removing Trees at Historic Golf Course

55 minutes ago 0

On Monday, a federal judge sharply criticized Trump administration officials for their actions at East Potomac Golf Links in Washington, D.C. The controversy involves the removal of hundreds of trees at the historic golf course, prompting the judge to question the government’s reliability.

During a heated hearing, U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes expressed her dissatisfaction with the National Park Service’s renovation plans for the golf course. Social media accounts report that Reyes, appointed by former President Joe Biden, repeatedly raised her voice during the proceedings.

Judge Reyes emphasized that she had instructed the government to inform her before conducting major demolition work. However, the government went ahead with cutting down more than 500 trees without proper notification. “This action has cost the government all of its credibility,” Reyes stated, according to social media posts. “I trusted you not to do precisely what you have done.” Reyes also expressed bewilderment at the administration’s actions.

The judge dismissed the Justice Department attorneys’ claims that they were unaware of the details concerning the tree removal plan. She firmly noted, “Ignorance is not an excuse.” To prevent further tree cutting, Reyes ordered a halt to the removals until at least 7 a.m. Tuesday. She issued a stern warning about contempt proceedings if her order was violated even by two seconds.

This dispute highlights the Trump administration’s intentions to transform the 106-year-old public golf course into a championship-level venue. The judge’s criticisms cast a shadow over these plans.
