U.S., Ukraine, and Russia Agree on Prisoner Exchange Amid Ongoing Peace Talks

2 months ago 0

U.S. special presidential envoy for peace missions, Steve Witkoff, has announced an agreement on a significant prisoner exchange involving the United States, Ukraine, and Russia. The agreement, finalized on Thursday, marks the first exchange of prisoners between these nations in five months, involving a total of 314 individuals.

In an announcement posted on social media platform X, it was revealed, “Today, delegations from the United States, Ukraine, and Russia agreed to exchange 314 prisoners, which is a landmark event since the past five months. The peace talks, which have been detailed and productive, have resulted in this outcome. Though there is still much work to be done, such steps illustrate that continuous diplomatic efforts yield significant results and further the agenda of bringing peace to Ukraine.”

Witkoff discussed the recent talks with Russian counterparts, describing them as ‘productive and constructive’ within the broader context of the Trump administration’s peace initiatives.

The special envoy addressed attendees at the IAC National Summit in January 2026, held at The Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood, Florida. Witkoff expressed optimism about further advancements, noting, “Discussions are ongoing, and we anticipate additional progress in the upcoming weeks. We are grateful to the United Arab Emirates for facilitating these discussions and extend our thanks to President Donald J. Trump for his leadership in making this agreement achievable.”

President Donald Trump’s administration is actively working towards brokering a peace deal to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. He recently addressed the conflict as part of a broader dialogue with Chinese President Xi Jinping, highlighting it as a major topic during a phone conversation. The U.S. President met with President Xi at Gimhae Air Base in Busan, South Korea, in late October 2025.

Senator Lindsey Graham, representing South Carolina, in a recent post urged President Trump to consider supplying Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles, describing them as a potential ‘game changer’ in military terms.

In a statement to the media, Graham emphasized, “In the forthcoming days and weeks, it is critical to escalate pressure on Putin. Any negotiations perceived as rewarding aggressive behavior could trigger global crises. Conversely, if the negotiations ensure a free, robust, and independent Ukraine, even if concessions are made, the world will be more stable.”
