NBC’s Return Co-stars Jordan Amidst NBA GOAT Debate

NBC’s Return to NBA Coverage

The return of NBC to NBA coverage has brought a wave of nostalgia for basketball fans. The network regained the league’s rights under an 11-year media agreement. This reignited the iconic theme song from the early 1990s to the early 2000s. ESPN, owned by Disney, and Amazon Prime Video have also joined this new media deal. This agreement signifies a shift from TNT, the former longtime NBA broadcast partner.

Michael Jordan’s Special Role

As NBC prepared for its 2025-26 season, they announced Michael Jordan as a “special contributor.” Jordan, an NBA legend and six-time champion with the Chicago Bulls, added a distinct star quality to their lineup. However, his involvement was limited to a single interview with Mike Tirico. NBC broadcast the segments throughout the season rather than featuring Jordan regularly in the studio.

“I love the fact that we did one interview… people are still talking about it,” Tirico commented during an event in New York City.

The decision to air the interview in parts allowed speculation and interest to continue long after the original broadcast.

Focus and Impact of the Interview

Jordan’s interview diverged from daily NBA topics or current players like LeBron James. Instead, it covered wider subjects such as load management and Jordan’s enduring passion for basketball. This approach did not cater to all viewers. Some expected Jordan to weigh in on contemporary players or recent controversies.

Despite this, Tirico argued the segments provided insight into Jordan’s authentic personality. He recognized Jordan’s unique presence and preferred discretion regarding daily NBA discussions.

Future Possibilities

Tirico expressed interest in conducting future interviews with Jordan. He emphasized the honor of discussing not only basketball but business and other interests with the charismatic former player.

The upcoming NBA season begins on October 20, featuring matchups like the Boston Celtics facing the Detroit Pistons. The reigning champions, New York Knicks, will take on the Philadelphia 76ers, concluding with the San Antonio Spurs battling the Oklahoma City Thunder.
