New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has stated he has “no plans” to dismiss NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. This follows demands from his democratic socialist allies for her removal due to protests surrounding an ICE-related shooting in the Bronx.
During a Tuesday ceremony honoring fallen NYPD officers, Mamdani addressed questions regarding Tisch’s future. “Jessica Tisch is the police commissioner. I have no plans to change that,” Mamdani told reporters. He cited Tisch’s success in reducing corruption and crime in the city as reasons for his decision. “We have delivered the lowest recorded number of murders and shootings in our city’s history,” he noted, referring to their 10-month collaboration.

These remarks came after the city’s Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) chapter demanded Tisch’s removal following the Bronx shooting involving ICE. The incident involved Oscar Belgal, a 28-year-old Dominican national, who was shot during a federal immigration operation.
According to Homeland Security, Belgal did not comply with officers during a targeted ICE arrest. Despite the incident, City Hall indicated Mamdani is reviewing the shooting but not planning to remove Tisch.
Scott Munro, head of the Detectives’ Endowment Association, commented that Mamdani supports Tisch, highlighting her contributions to reduced crime.
Mamdani and Tisch attended the New York City Police Memorial honoring 42 fallen NYPD members, including 41 who died from illnesses related to the 9/11 attacks. Detective First Grade Didarul Islam, killed in a 2025 mass shooting, was also remembered.
The growing 9/11 death toll remains a concern due to lasting toxic exposure effects on survivors.
The ceremony also saw the mayor pay tribute to the officers and their families. “While we cannot feel the silence they left behind, we will refuse to let their memory fade,” Mamdani said.
Earlier, Mamdani instructed the NYPD to review its use-of-force policies. He also announced measures to improve accountability for police misconduct.
