President Donald Trump expressed his well wishes for Pope Leo XIV following the pontiff’s recent lung cancer diagnosis. The president made his remarks while traveling on Air Force One from Arizona to Montana.
During the flight, Trump commented on Pope Leo’s health, stating, “I want to see Pope Leo get well. I hear the prognosis for that type of a problem. It’s a cancer. But the prognosis seems to be good. We just want to wish him our love and our best wishes.”
Trump also mentioned his friendship with the pope’s brother, describing him as a strong supporter of Trump’s campaign. “His brother is a friend of mine, a fantastic guy, and his wife. They’re big Trump supporters. They have MAGA all over their house,” Trump noted.
These comments came after the Vatican’s announcement that Pope Leo XIV had been diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma. The diagnosis followed a surgical procedure at Agostino Gemelli University Hospital in Rome, where doctors successfully removed the lower lobe of the pope’s right lung. The surgery lasted approximately 90 minutes without complications.
The Vatican stated that the cancer diagnosis was confirmed through examining tissue from the surgery. Previous tests had suggested the presence of a small lump in his lung, which led doctors to recommend the surgery. Pope Leo is reported to have recovered well from the procedure and returned to his hospital room after observation.
