Somali Community Responds to Federal Raid on Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Residence

In Minneapolis, members of the Somali community voiced their objections to President Trump’s administration following the raid on Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington, D.C. residence. Jamal Osman, vice president of the Minneapolis City Council, expressed feelings of being targeted by President Trump.

Somalis — we all feel attacked by President Trump,” said Osman, commenting on the raid executed by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents.

Osman accused the president of having violated the law, and condemned the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) within their community.

Osman addressed the media during a press conference at City Hall in Minneapolis, criticizing the administration’s intentions to target Somali immigrants in the region.

Abdi, a social worker from Minneapolis, expressed outrage, describing the raid as an attempt to dehumanize Rep. Omar, attributing it to Trump’s dislike of Somali individuals.

“I feel like raiding a congresswoman … it feels like Donald Trump and his regime wanted to use their power to dehumanize and also humiliate someone that is part of the Congress,” Abdi stated.

Abdi alleged that Trump’s hostility toward Omar fueled discrimination against Somalis in the U.S.

A third individual, a young Somali American woman, shared her expectations that Omar would face such scrutiny, noting past disparaging rhetoric on her immigration status.

The White House, responding to comments from Minneapolis’ Somali community, referred Fox News to Trump’s public comments, where he expressed personal disdain for Omar.

HSI executed the search warrant at Omar’s residence, amid an investigation into alleged fraudulent citizenship paperwork involving her and her late father. Seizures included Omar’s phone, passport, and computers, as confirmed by Fox News.

Rep. Omar denounced the raid on social media, calling it an unwarranted abuse of power and escalation against political adversaries.

This raid by Trump’s DHS is an outrageous abuse of power and an unprecedented escalation in the weaponization of federal law enforcement to target political enemies,” she stated.
