Rallies Encourage Early Voting Amid Tensions Over Voting Rights

1 hour ago 0

Rallies organized by the No Kings network opposed to President Donald Trump took place in various cities across the U.S. These events aimed to encourage early voting in the midterm elections. Although advertised as nonpartisan, they built on nearly two years of protests by those dissatisfied with Trump’s presidency.

In Washington, D.C., a protest near the Lincoln Memorial featured a band playing to a few hundred attendees. Despite the cold weather, participants danced, holding signs like “VOTE EARLY” and “HANDS OFF MY VOTE!” At an Atlanta rally, City Councilman Michael Julian Bond urged people to vote before the November 3 election.

“The constitution gives you one power, right? That is the power to vote. Are you gonna use that power? You don’t see Superman giving up his power,” Bond told the crowd. “You don’t see Black Panther giving up his power. You don’t see Wonder Woman giving up her magic lasso. So why would you give up your right, your power, your obligation to vote? Be a superhero, use your power. Go to the polls and vote.”

Events like the “No Kings: Vote Early” protest drew people in places such as Manhattan, New York City. Trump’s longstanding skepticism towards mail voting became evident once more. He claimed, without proof, that fraud cost him the 2020 election. His administration sued California election officials to prevent counting mail-in ballots from individuals the federal government labeled as “likely” noncitizens until verifying their status.

The Justice Department on Friday warned officials involved in processing votes that they could face criminal probes. Senate Democrats Alex Padilla, Sheldon Whitehouse, and Dick Durbin demanded assurance from Attorney General Todd Blanche that the Justice Department would not seize ballots or election materials before midterm certification.
