Arrest in Connection with Attack on MP Helen Haines

Australian media have reported the arrest of Brendan Nugent concerning the attack on MP Helen Haines. The incident took place outside Haines’ electorate office in Wangaratta, northeast Victoria. A Toyota Land Cruiser struck Haines, causing her to be in critical condition at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. She has lost one leg, and doctors are working to save the other.

While Victoria police have not officially confirmed Nugent as the suspect, they have stated that a 43-year-old man is currently in custody. Nugent has been identified by ABC News and other outlets as the individual arrested following the attack. His family members have mentioned a long-standing friendship with Haines, spanning over two decades.

Legal Proceedings

Nugent is expected to appear at Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. Media sources indicate a police operation at a property in Tarrawingee, believed to be Nugent’s residence, which is about eight miles from Wangaratta.

Background of the Suspect

Nugent is known as a former forestry campaigner and environmental advocate. He holds a master’s degree in forest ecosystems science from the University of Melbourne and has spent years studying the forestry industry in Victoria. Previously, he was part of the committee for the anti-logging group Save Our Strathbogie Forest. However, he disconnected from the group around 2020.

Bertram Lobert, chair of the group, described Nugent as a “reasonable and thoughtful person” who eventually distanced himself from the environmental community. Nugent had been active in sharing opinions on environmental concerns and politics through social media. A post on his X account from April 12, 2018, featured the vehicle implicated in the attack on Haines.

Nugent’s interactions with Haines on social media reflected respect for her stance on climate change and did not show criticism toward her. His posts also addressed environmental issues to other politicians.

Community Reaction

Community members and friends have expressed shock at the incident. Nugent’s father, Rod Nugent, and his partner, Christine Cunningham, issued a statement expressing disbelief over the events, thanking the local community and police for their assistance to Haines. They extended their love and thoughts to Haines, her family, and friends.
