Iranian Opposition Groups Intensify Armed Resistance in Southeastern Provinces

1 hour ago 0

A coalition of Iranian opposition groups has launched a series of armed attacks against the clerical regime in Sistan and Baluchistan and Kerman provinces. The coalition, known as the People’s Fighters Front (JMM), has carried out six strikes that have increased instability in these areas.

Sistan and Baluchistan, a majority Iranian Sunni province in an otherwise Shiite Muslim country, faces significant discrimination. The coalition’s actions raise questions about whether this armed resistance could spread and if the Iranian regime can maintain its control over the region.

Mardo Soghom, an expert on the Islamic Republic, stated to Fox News Digital, “The Sunni unrest can stretch the regime’s military and internal security capabilities. It can have a psychological impact on its forces, beyond what they experienced during operations by the U.S. and Israel. While these groups may not control the southeast, they can significantly weaken the regime’s hold.”

The Human Rights Activist News Agency (HRANA) reported an increase in violence in these provinces, with 18 incidents recorded in 18 days, surpassing any previous month’s total. The JMM formed in December 2025 from Baloch nationalist groups and the militant Jaish al-Adl.

HRANA documented at least 63 armed incidents between March and October 2026 in the region, resulting in 94 deaths and 33 injuries, according to official sources.

Jason Brodsky, policy director at United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI), noted, “There have been periodic cycles of unrest in Sistan and Baluchistan. We now witness an uptick in this activity. The IRGC’s Ground Forces commander, Mohammad Karami, a former governor of the province, was elevated to his post due in part to his experience with the region’s sensitive security situation.”

The coalition shocked the regime on October 14 by assassinating women members of the Basij paramilitaries, including a commander and a police officer. Days earlier, a senior provincial official was killed by a roadside bomb.

Navid Mohebbi, formerly a Persian media analyst for the U.S. State Department, stated, “The popular Fighters Front has carried out successful attacks against mid-level regime officials, gaining some public attention. Yet, the Iranian public remains cautious and distrustful due to concerns about separatist ambitions and radical Islamism.”

Mohebbi sees encouraging signs from the JMM, noting their focus on dismantling the system of Velayat-e Faqih and liberating Iran, rather than Baluch separatism. However, the group’s capacity is limited to guerrilla operations, which may not extend beyond Sistan and Baluchistan.

Beni Sabti, an expert at the Institute for National Security Studies, commented, “The coalition has a lot of guns and created an armed rebellion against the regime. However, their impact remains limited to the Baluchistan region.”
