Angel Reese played a crucial role in Game 2 of the WNBA Finals, contributing significantly to the Atlanta Dream’s 79-65 victory over the Golden State Valkyries. The game took place on Monday night at Chase Center. Reese scored 30 points and secured 16 rebounds, allowing the Dream to even the series at 1-1.
Reese’s performance marked a historic achievement as she became the youngest player to record 30 points and 15 rebounds in a WNBA postseason game. Alongside her scoring and rebounding, Reese added three assists, two blocks, and a steal to her record-breaking night.
Before the game started, a controversy arose when both teams chose not to be present on the court for the national anthem. This decision stands in opposition to the WNBA’s rulebook, which mandates that players, coaches, and trainers be present during the anthem. The league has yet to respond to inquiries regarding this absence.
The Atlanta Dream had been winless in their previous Finals appearances, suffering defeats in 2010, 2011, and 2013, and losing the series opener this year. Reese helped break this streak with a dominant first half, scoring 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting. This effort surpassed her total points from Game 1.
An outburst in the third quarter saw Reese briefly express frustration. With the game tied at 40, she momentarily stepped out of position on offense. However, she quickly redeemed herself with a strong defensive play, blocking against Tiffany Hayes, followed by a successful three-point play against Kiah Stokes.
Despite entering the second half with three fouls, Reese managed to avoid further fouls and remained on the court throughout the third quarter. The Valkyries did not take advantage of this, as they continued to focus on perimeter shots instead of drawing fouls in the paint.
Both teams recorded four field goals in the third quarter, each making one three-pointer. Atlanta capitalized on their opportunities at the foul line, going 12-for-12, while Golden State failed to attempt any free throws during this period.
Entering the fourth quarter, the Dream maintained a strong lead, eventually extending it to 21 points with just over six minutes left in the game. Reese contributed an additional six points in the final quarter, including a decisive 24-foot three-pointer.
The series now shifts to Atlanta’s State Farm Arena for Game 3, scheduled for Wednesday. This marks an important moment for the Dream as they aim to take control of the Finals series.
