Potential Defense Department Leadership Change After Midterms

43 minutes ago 0

Senate Democrats are considering a change in leadership at the Department of Defense following the midterm elections as part of a strategic move. They are proposing the removal of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to gain cooperation on important defense issues in the lame-duck session.

The Defense Department, under Hegseth’s guidance, has achieved record recruitment numbers. President Trump supports Hegseth, admiring his appearance and leadership style. However, some Republican senators have criticized his decisions, particularly the removal of respected military figures like Army Secretary Dan Driscoll and others.

Democratic senators see Hegseth’s time as a failure and plan to use their influence after the elections to push him out. They had previously attempted similar tactics with former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem during funding disputes.

Currently, Democrats can leverage Hegseth’s position by threatening to delay emergency defense funding requested by the White House and regular defense department funding set to expire on December 11.

The Hill’s Alexander Bolton gathered insights from key sources on Capitol Hill. There is growing concern about the alignment between Trump and Hegseth on critical issues.
