A Floridian mother, Tara Johnson, decided to delve into her adoptive daughter Agnas’ heritage, only to find an unexpected bond between them. Aiming to uncover the diverse cultures in Agnas’ background, Tara tested the DNA of her 7-year-old daughter. Having celebrated her Sicilian roots, Tara desires to instill a sense of belonging in all her children and considers understanding their heritage crucial.
“When Agnas joined our family, she brought an extensive history that preceded us,” Tara shared. “As her mother, I believe it’s vital to honor not only the chapters that began with us but also those predating us.” Tara and her partner Troy also have three other children: Hallie, 13, Theo, 9, and Rowan, 6.
Agnas’ biological mother informed Tara about Agnas’ Lebanese grandfather, though little was known about her paternal lineage. The DNA results brought surprise and delight. According to a TikTok clip (@tarakole) shared by Tara, Agnas was found to be 24.6% Scottish and Welsh, 23.6% Southern Italian, 19.3% English, and 5.8% Dutch. The revelation of Southern Italian ancestry particularly excited Tara.
“Celebrating my Sicilian heritage brought immense pride,” she expressed. “Finding Southern Italian ancestry in Agnas’ results was an unexpectedly joyous discovery.” Though absent of Lebanese ancestry, Tara plans to try another DNA service for potentially more precise findings. She accepts that such tests offer estimates and not definitive insights into personal identity.
Tara’s mission is to ensure Agnas connects with every part of her past. The family maintains a bond with Agnas’ biological relatives, including her mother, brother, aunt, and cousins, reinforcing that Agnas doesn’t have to choose between the families who care for her.
The journey strengthened Tara’s view that ancestry and family ties differ, yet both hold value. “DNA reveals ancestry but cannot gauge love or the relationships we form,” Tara reflected. “Becoming part of our family wasn’t a new chapter for Agnas, it enriched her story, and ours too.”
