Rays and Brewers Set for Historic World Series Showdown

49 minutes ago 0

An excited crowd of 40,230 filled Tropicana Field on Monday, Oct. 19, to witness the Tampa Bay Rays secure their first American League pennant since 2020. The fans left thrilled as the Rays overcame the Cleveland Guardians in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series, with a score of 7-3. The Rays now head to the World Series against the Milwaukee Brewers, starting Friday at American Family Field.

This World Series marks a historic face-off, as neither the Rays nor the Brewers have previously clinched a championship. One team is destined for a first in franchise history.

During Game 6, the Rays maintained control throughout. Freddy Peralta, Tampa Bay’s starting pitcher, gave a strong performance, allowing just one run over 5.1 innings. Cleveland tried a bullpen strategy, hoping to stretch the series to a deciding Game 7, yet the Rays led 3-0 by the third inning.

Cleveland rallied to tighten the game to 3-1 and later 5-3. However, Yandy Diaz hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning off Guardians pitcher Hunter Gaddis, cushioning the Rays’ lead and earning Diaz a heartfelt curtain call from the fans at Tropicana Field.

The Rays previously lost the World Series to the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008 and the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020. Only two players from the past World Series team, Diaz and pitcher Shane McClanahan, remain on the roster, though McClanahan is currently injured.

Despite having the fifth-lowest Opening Day payroll in MLB, the Rays achieved the American League’s best regular-season record, securing home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Rays manager Kevin Cash reflected on the season, stating, “This team really came together well during Spring Training, especially considering the roster changes. There were many new players, but they bonded closely.”

He added, “Any challenges were handled superbly. Even after the All-Star break, when we were swept by Boston, it didn’t shake the team. Facing a hot divisional opponent, they stayed calm and focused. We lost, but we didn’t defeat ourselves. The mindset remained strong.”
