During a rally in Henrico County, Virginia, several Democrats addressed the current war in Iran as a significant election issue, extending beyond its effects on gas prices. This conflict has disrupted oil markets and posed a challenge for Republicans in the midterm elections. In Virginia, a state with substantial military influence, the repercussions are profound.
Former representative Elaine Luria, speaking at a rally in eastern Henrico County, highlighted the war’s impact, stating it deploys sailors under misleading casualty reports. Luria is contesting Rep. Jen Kiggans in the 2nd District, which includes key Navy locations in Virginia Beach.
Henrico prosecutor Shannon Taylor, challenging Rep. Rob Wittman in the 1st District, also addressed her rival’s support for the conflict. Concurrently, former representative Tom Perriello is vying to reclaim the 5th District seat from Rep. John McGuire, emphasizing his intention to help end the war.
Joining the rally was Pete Buttigieg, former transportation secretary and military veteran, advocating for Democrats to seize control of the House by gaining four seats. Speaking to an energized crowd, Buttigieg stressed the strategic importance of Virginia in achieving this majority.
Luria: “This war … is sending our sailors overseas under an administration that’s lying about the number of casualties.”
