Amanda Seyfried’s Controversial Appearance in Elizabeth Holmes Documentary

1 day ago 0

Amanda Seyfried faced criticism following her role in the latest Elizabeth Holmes documentary, ‘You Can See Everything.’ This film, featuring Nathan Fielder, examined Holmes’ final 34 days before entering Federal Prison Camp Bryan on May 30, 2023.

Seyfried, known for portraying Holmes in Hulu’s ‘The Dropout,’ explored her shifting viewpoint on the Theranos founder in the documentary released on October 16. She revisited Holmes’ personal life and her relationship with Billy Evans, while working to recreate conversations Holmes had after reporting to prison.

Throughout the documentary, Seyfried grappled with feelings of sympathy toward Holmes, despite the convicted fraudster’s critique of Seyfried’s portrayal in the Hulu series. This attempt to defend Holmes, coupled with accusations of hypocrisy, resulted in backlash from viewers.

An X user commented, “Amanda Seyfried defending Holmes as a victim of male manipulation until Holmes accused her of participating in a sensationalized version of the Theranos scandal and then flipping out about how it is just TV was a truly gross,” expressing dissatisfaction with Seyfried’s stance.

Others criticized Seyfried for allegedly shielding Holmes until scrutiny came her way. They accused her of using emotional manipulation when challenged on her role in depicting the scandal.

Despite the criticism, some viewers supported Seyfried, arguing her change of heart underscored an important aspect of the documentary. They contended that her evolving opinion was natural and integral to the film’s larger message.

“Imagine walking away from this blaming Amanda Seyfried,” one user wrote. “The point is, Amanda herself changes her opinion on Elizabeth Holmes. So does Nathan Fielder. So does the audience. That’s the literal point.”

Another viewer pointed out that Seyfried confronted the consequences of her actions, even feeling she did no wrong, contrasting with Holmes’ lack of reckoning with Theranos’ impact on others.

Holmes’ conviction in January 2022 involved four federal fraud charges for misleading investors about Theranos’ technology. She received an 11-year prison sentence, starting November 2022.

‘You Can See Everything’ scrutinized Holmes’ attempts to restore her public image following Theranos’ implosion. The film offered insights into Holmes’ efforts to navigate life post-scandal and examined the stark differences between public perceptions of her and her self-image.
