Stephen A. Smith defended his decision to meet with President Donald Trump during his “Straight Shooter” show. He emphasized the importance of raising key issues with the president, focusing on the impact of ending DEI initiatives on corporate philanthropy to HBCUs.
Smith noted he informed Trump that the suppression of DEI policies discourages corporate leaders from donating to HBCUs. He urged Trump to address this concern. According to Smith, Trump committed to tackling the issue and planned a meeting with HBCU officials to discuss it further.
The meeting at the White House on October 15 included Smith, comedian Bill Maher, and musician Kid Rock. Smith faced criticism for his presence at the meeting but challenged his critics by questioning their actions and efforts toward community issues.
Smith addressed comments by comedian D.L. Hughley, who criticized him for engaging with Trump. Hughley questioned why Trump felt comfortable with Smith, suggesting it reflected negatively on Smith. In response, Smith expressed frustration with those who criticize efforts to address community concerns without taking action themselves.
On “The View,” Smith reiterated his stance, refusing to apologize for meeting Trump. When co-host Sunny Hostin questioned the effectiveness of the meeting given Trump’s history, Smith acknowledged the uncertainty of the outcome but emphasized the importance of engaging with the president as a constitutional necessity.
Smith argued that Trump would likely remain a political factor until 2028 and urged readiness to address issues through engagement. He maintained that his actions aimed to benefit his community.
Fox News contributor Joe Concha commented on Smith’s willingness to engage in dialogue with differing opinions, contrasting it with trends to silence debate. Smith’s approach reflects a commitment to open ideas exchange.
