North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited China to inaugurate a new bridge connecting the two nations. This visit marked his first trip to China in a year and underscored his intent to enhance cooperation with China amid tense relations with the United States.
Kim arrived in Dandong, a Chinese border city, after crossing the newly opened bridge. His visit aligns with his strategy to form alliances with Beijing and Moscow, opposing the U.S. in a scenario often depicted as a ‘new Cold War.’
During the visit, Kim toured a memorial in Dandong, commemorating China’s involvement in the Korean War. He met Wang Huning from China’s Communist Party’s Standing Committee and emphasized the enduring DPRK-China friendship. Kim vowed to strengthen bilateral ties, echoing sentiments shared by Wang, who conveyed President Xi Jinping’s regards.
Journalists were excluded from covering the event, according to reports. Kim visited a car factory and later returned to North Korea via the new bridge. He expressed that the bridge would play a crucial role in uniting the peoples of North Korea and China.
In recent years, Kim has focused on reinforcing the alliance with China, North Korea’s longstanding ally and economic supporter, following years of prioritizing relations with Russia. As part of a strategic move, North Korea has reportedly supplied troops and weapons to Russia, assisting in their conflict in Ukraine in exchange for military and economic benefits.
Kim’s last visit to Beijing was in September 2025, where he met Xi Jinping and witnessed a military parade with global leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.
