Cruise from New Jersey Re-routed to Canada due to Storm Concerns

1 day ago 0

Passengers aboard Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas experienced an unexpected change of plans. Originally set to sail to Florida and the Bahamas, the cruise was redirected to Halifax, Canada. This decision was made due to forecasts of stormy weather along the East Coast.

Over 5,000 passengers embarked on this journey from New Jersey on October 18. The sudden itinerary change meant passengers found themselves exploring the chilly streets of Halifax instead of soaking up the sun in the Bahamas.

The ship made a brief 24-hour stop in Halifax. During this time, passengers had the opportunity to explore the city, shop, and enjoy harbor rides. The vessel then departed, heading back to New Jersey, with a scheduled return after three days at sea.

Passenger Reactions

The announcement of the itinerary change came just one day before departure. This left passengers with little time to prepare. Marie Durning, a New Jersey resident, expressed her surprise at the change. She had to scramble to prepare for colder weather, remarking on her need for warmer clothing.

While some passengers viewed the change as a chance to enjoy a new destination, others were disappointed. Nicholas Meli, who traveled seven hours from Toronto, shared his frustration, hoping instead to bask in the warm climate of the Bahamas.

Online discussions highlighted mixed feelings about the surprise stop in Halifax. Many expressed fondness for the city but acknowledged it wasn’t the tropical getaway they anticipated.

Compensation and Policy

Passengers received a 50% travel voucher and refunds for pre-planned shore excursions. Royal Caribbean’s policies allow for itinerary changes in cases like weather disturbances. The company is not obligated to refund fares when ports are changed.

Royal Caribbean has yet to provide additional comments on the situation. This adjustment showcases the challenges of ensuring passenger safety while balancing expectations on a cruise voyage.
