Parker McCollum, once a boy eager to join hunting trips with his father, now relishes passing those experiences to his own children. With two sons, he anticipates being on the other side of those cherished childhood memories.
Recently, McCollum spent time with his eldest son, Major, at their family ranch. This visit marked a significant moment for the country music star. ‘I was taking him with me to just do some ranch stuff,’ McCollum shared in an interview with OutKick OutDoors. ‘He can’t contribute much yet, but watching him enjoy the space matters more.’ Despite Major’s age, McCollum finds fulfillment in this shared time, remembering his own childhood vividly.
I remember those days so vividly. My dad would get me out of school early on a Friday to go down to the lease or the ranch, and we would let it rip all weekend. Usually, it was just him and I.
A Lifelong Passion for Hunting
McCollum’s hunting enthusiasm traces back to his early childhood years. He recalls his father teaching him to hunt birds with a .410 shotgun at age eight. His affection for the sport predates these outings, however, having envied family trips before he was old enough to join. Once invited, he became an avid outdoor enthusiast.
His upbringing went beyond hunting to include summers on a cattle ranch with family. Now, McCollum aims for his sons, Major and Rocker, to develop a similar love for the outdoors. For him, it transcends merely harvesting game.
‘Good for Your Soul’
Amid a bustling music career and a busy family life, McCollum acknowledges the challenges of finding tranquility. He asserts that outdoor experiences rejuvenate the spirit. ‘There’s nothing I love more than sitting in a tree in East Texas or South Texas or the Midwest,’ he stated. ‘Even if you don’t see a deer, there’s something about it that’s so good for your soul.’
Family ranch trips focus on slowing down rather than accomplishing a checklist. ‘Our whole intention was just slowing it down and turning it off and just spending time as a family, and no agenda,’ McCollum explained. They enjoy leisurely days and evenings hunting, cooking, and exploring the ranch.
He emphasizes the importance of maintaining these traditions amid modern life’s chaos. ‘Don’t ever get so busy or worried about other stuff that you forget to do this,’ he advises. This lesson forms a core part of what McCollum hopes to instill in his children.
