The San Francisco 49ers experienced their first defeat of the season against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Compounding the setback, running back Christian McCaffrey sustained a thigh injury in the first quarter, which could add him to a future injury report.
McCaffrey spent the first half on the sideline, trying to stay warm. Despite the injury, he returned to action after the halftime break. He later addressed reporters about the incident.
“I was just trying to keep it warm and not make it worse. But there’s only so much you can do to get back to where you want to be. I’ll be fine. I know that,” McCaffrey expressed. “I’ll be alright. I know I’ll get this thing back and be ready.”
McCaffrey shared his frustration over the injury, as he believed he was headed for a strong performance.
“Adrenaline’s going and everything’s going. I came back to the sideline, and it just slowly started to hurt,” he said. “I’ll be fine. I’m not worried about it. It just sucks today because it was one of those moments where I felt like I got going.”
The concern now lies in understanding the extent of McCaffrey’s injury. After the game, he was uncertain about the severity, which caused concern among fans.
“I have no idea. It sucks because I feel like I was on a good run,” McCaffrey admitted. “My leg just died on me. I was trying to get it going for the rest of the game, but it just sucks trying to play like that. I know I’ll be alright, but it’s really frustrating.”
McCaffrey has dealt with injuries throughout his career. It seems as if every season brings a new challenge, though he did complete a full season last year. If the thigh injury sidelines him, he is well-versed in recovery and preparing for a comeback.
Despite playing a shortened game, McCaffrey recorded 39 rushing yards and a touchdown on seven carries. He also caught six passes for 61 yards. Impressively, McCaffrey achieved his 70th career rushing touchdown. He joins Pro Football Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk as the only players to achieve at least 70 rushing touchdowns and 30 receiving touchdowns in their careers.
