1 day ago 0

The New York Mets’ shortstop, Francisco Lindor, has been awarded the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award for 2026. This accolade honors a player who exemplifies Major League Baseball both on and off the field. Lindor stands as the fifth Puerto Rican-born player to receive the award, named after the renowned Puerto Rican icon.

The Mets expressed their pride in Lindor’s achievement through social media. Their message celebrated his remarkable character, community involvement, and philanthropic efforts. A short video narrated by Lindor accompanied the announcement, showcasing his dedication to various charitable activities.

Lindor shared his passion for unifying people and learning from them, stating, “I’m all about bringing people together. I’m all about bringing them to the next step, and learn from them as well.” His efforts include collaboration with the nonprofit Seen to support families with children facing physical disabilities. Additionally, he founded Lindor’s Leaders at Bayside High School, which focuses on mental health, communication, and leadership.

Lindor’s community contributions extend further. He has organized youth baseball clinics, provided essentials like backpacks and school supplies to numerous children annually, participated in environmental initiatives, and revitalized sporting facilities in his hometown of Caguas.

The award highlights Lindor’s remarkable season, marking his 12th year in MLB, which included his 300th career home run. Despite being nominated by the Mets for four consecutive years, this is his first time receiving the Roberto Clemente Award. Reflecting on the honor, Lindor expressed, “It’s a little bit surreal, you know? It’s bigger than baseball, in a way. Like, we are in the entertainment business, and we are there to bring smiles and joy to people, but also to carry it off the field to me is even cooler. So it’s something that I’ll forever continue to do.”
