The Dallas Cowboys find themselves in a competitive spot within the NFC East. Currently holding a 3-4 record, they trail behind the New York Giants, who are at 4-2-1. Following their recent victory over the struggling Philadelphia Eagles, the Cowboys are positioned as the second-best team in their division. However, their roster still lacks qualities needed for championship contention.
Leaders on the offensive side like quarterback Dak Prescott, running back Javonte Williams, and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb are posting impressive statistics. Despite strong offensive performances, the Cowboys’ defense falls short of having the crucial X-factor that can make a pivotal impact during playoffs.
Many speculate that team owner Jerry Jones and the Cowboys are actively exploring trade options to fill this defensive gap. Russell Wilson, a former NFL quarterback and currently a CBS Sports analyst, suggests that Jones knows the type of player they need. “If you’re Jerry, I’m definitely making some trades,” Wilson stated. He noted the importance of acquiring a player who can significantly impact the team, proposing names like Maxx Crosby as possibilities.
Russell Wilson emphasized, “Jerry’s not afraid to spend his money. If I were the GM, I’d be looking at options because the Raiders are no longer in the running.”
During the offseason, the Cowboys expressed strong interest in acquiring Crosby. However, the Baltimore Ravens moved quickly to offer two first-round picks to the Raiders for this Pro Bowl pass-rusher. This deal ultimately fell through, reportedly due to Crosby failing his physical. Some speculate the Ravens used a medical loophole to reverse the trade due to buyer’s remorse.
With the Raiders standing at 3-4 and trailing behind the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos in their division, some analysts believe the team might start trading away assets to gather draft capital for the 2027 draft.
If the Cowboys view adding a top pass-rusher as the missing piece for a Super Bowl win, trading away their first- and second-round picks seems reasonable. However, having already traded their 2027 first-round pick for Quinnen Williams last year, the high cost of acquiring Crosby might eliminate Dallas from further pursuit.
