The ongoing legal dispute between the LSU Tigers and the Southeastern Conference (SEC) remains dynamic, capturing attention in legal circles. Central to the conflict is former St. John’s basketball player RJ Luis, who faces hurdles in playing for LSU due to SEC rules regarding professional experience.
Initially, Luis received permission to play the upcoming season through a Louisiana judge’s order. This was linked to a lawsuit challenging NCAA eligibility rules for the 2022 class. However, the decision has since been complicated by additional legal proceedings involving LSU and the SEC.
In a recent development, a judge granted an injunction allowing Luis to play with LSU without SEC penalties until a November 13 hearing. This provides LSU with a temporary legal shield to include Luis on their roster.
“My client, Mr. Luis, felt it was in his best interest to file this claim against LSU and the SEC because of the commissioner’s actions and the commissioner’s threat,” said attorney Tony Clayton.
Despite the ruling, LSU must decide whether to roster Luis. Head coach Will Wade previously indicated compliance with SEC guidelines, avoiding former professional athletes. Yet, recent legal actions open possibilities for Luis’ participation.
The case draws parallels to earlier ones where athletes with NFL experience faced similar eligibility issues. Judge William Jorden ruled in their favor, yet LSU opted against including them due to potential SEC reprisals.
As lawyer Tony Clayton underscored, the complaint against LSU and the SEC aims to secure Luis’ ability to play basketball while addressing threats posed by SEC regulations.

The ongoing legal maneuvers may impact LSU’s decision-making, with a possibility of monetary damages being sought against the SEC. This scenario echoes earlier disputes involving NFL-affiliated athletes. Luis’ future at LSU remains under review until the injunction’s expiration.
With the November hearing looming, attention stays fixed on the outcomes for RJ Luis and the broader implications for LSU and the SEC.
