The Golden State Valkyries secured their first WNBA championship, defeating the Atlanta Dream 68-63 in a thrilling Game 7 finale. This victory ended a remarkable season that broke viewership and attendance records.

Golden State’s star player, Gabby Williams, played a pivotal role, scoring 30 points, blocking 4 shots, and making 3 steals in her 38 minutes on the court. She responded to critics by emphasizing the team’s talent and determination, stating, “We got good people. We got winners.”

Jordin Canada was the leading scorer for Atlanta with 18 points, alongside contributions of 5 assists and 4 rebounds. However, Angel Reese had a challenging game, achieving only 8 points on 3-of-7 shooting.

This championship marks the Valkyries’ first title in their second season and the first time a team won a Game 7 since the league’s transition to a seven-game series format last year. The Atlanta Dream remain winless in four Finals appearances.

The 2026 WNBA season witnessed unprecedented success. A record-breaking 3.8 million fans attended 330 regular season games, with average attendance increasing by 21% compared to last year’s record. Television viewership also soared, as ESPN, ABC, and CBS reported their highest ratings, with triple the number of games drawing at least 1 million viewers.

The Valkyries’ impressive journey was fueled by key acquisitions and strategic leadership. Owned by Joe Lacob and Peter Guber, both also owners of the Golden State Warriors, the team finished their inaugural season with a 23-21 record. Their first playoff appearance ended in the first round. The signing of Gabby Williams significantly boosted their performance, leading to a successful 32-12 regular season.

Golden State overcame formidable opponents to reach the Finals, defeating the Dallas Wings and Las Vegas Aces. Meanwhile, Atlanta had a dominant run, sweeping the Washington Mystics and New York Liberty.

Game 1 saw Golden State secure a win with Williams scoring 26 points. Atlanta responded in Games 2 and 3, dominated by Angel Reese’s outstanding performances. However, Reese struggled in subsequent games as Golden State regained control.

Game 6 was marked by scheduling conflicts due to NBA commitments at the State Farm Arena. Despite concerns raised by team ownership over conflicting playoff schedules, the game proceeded with a sellout crowd.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert praised the collaborative efforts that enabled another successful event at State Farm Arena, highlighting the strong fan support and electric atmosphere.
