Overview of Jeddah Tower
Jeddah Tower in Saudi Arabia is set to become the tallest building in the world upon completion. Recently, it marked a significant milestone in its construction journey. Designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG) and constructed by Saudi Binladin Group (SBG), the tower has now reached 454 meters in height, which is approximately 1,489 feet, and stands at 113 floors. This accomplishment was shared on LinkedIn by Ian Norman Miller, SBG’s senior executive project director.
Comparison with Other Skyscrapers
With its current height, Jeddah Tower has surpassed Malaysia’s Petronas Towers, which previously held the title of the world’s tallest building at 452 meters, around 1,483 feet, in 1998. It lost this title later to Taiwan’s Taipei 101 Tower, according to the Skyscraper Museum.
Bob Forest, a partner at AS+GG, expressed his sentiments on surpassing the record-holder. He noted the effort required to reach this milestone, especially given the challenging hot temperatures experienced in Jeddah during the end of summer.
Design and Future Milestones
The Jeddah Tower, designed by Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill, co-founders of AS+GG, will ultimately ascend over 1,000 meters, equating to around 3,281 feet. This will surpass the current tallest building, Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which stands at 2,717 feet. Smith also designed Burj Khalifa during his tenure at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill before co-founding AS+GG.
Challenges in Construction
The tower’s construction has faced engineering challenges, particularly in developing a structural system that performs efficiently at unprecedented heights. Another major challenge involves weather constraints. High winds, in particular, can halt progress, as they are difficult to predict accurately until construction time.
Forest praised the construction team for their perseverance and progress in improving productivity and speed. He emphasized the team’s dedication to successful completion by the anticipated date of August 2028.
Upcoming Benchmarks
Forest highlighted two major milestones in the coming stages:
- Reaching the 500-meter mark, approximately halfway through the tower’s height.
- Surpassing Taipei 101 to become the next tallest record holder.
These milestones reflect progress, yet indicate substantial effort needed to finalize the structure. The ultimate goal remains completing Jeddah Tower beyond 1 kilometer, which demands ongoing dedication from the team.
