Grocery chains in Europe are dealing with a new wave of cyberattacks. These attacks caused temperature spikes in refrigerators and freezers over the last month. Incidents have occurred in countries including Belgium, Luxembourg, and Sweden.
In Belgium, Ahold Delhaize and Colruyt reported issues on Monday. An overnight IT incident increased temperatures in fridge and freezer units across several stores.
On the same day, Swedish chains ICA and Coop faced similar problems. While one location attributed its issues to a cyberattack, others remain uncertain.
Earlier, French chains such as E. Leclerc, Intermarché, and Cooperative U experienced complete refrigeration failures. Temperatures rose as high as 122 degrees Fahrenheit, causing food spoilage.
“We’ve been working very hard to protect our customers’ fridges against this vulnerability,” stated Stephan Moelans, CEO of Sabcobel, the Belgian refrigeration company involved.
On October 12, French stores suffered another cyberattack affecting hundreds of outlets. These breaches also involved the refrigeration systems, leading to considerable food wastage.
Despite these incidents, no group has claimed responsibility for the attacks. Concerns over food security have escalated. European Union food and agriculture officials emphasize the need for networked system security.
“Food security requires more attention at all levels,” said EU Commissioner Christophe Hansen. “Targeting equipment essential to food supply is of extreme gravity,” added Dominique Schelcher of Cooperative U.
Currently, efforts are underway to repair and secure the affected systems. However, the need for physical modifications and investments remains a challenge.
