Hasan Piker, a well-known far-left commentator, livestreamed on Twitch for over 13 hours during Election Day. The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) selected Piker to host their official election night livestream. This decision prompted a strong reaction from Anti-Defamation League (ADL) CEO Jonathan Greenblatt. Greenblatt criticized the DSA for choosing Piker, accusing the group of promoting rhetoric supportive of terrorism and antisemitism.
Greenblatt expressed his concerns in a post on X, questioning why the DSA chose Piker, who he said supports terrorist organizations and traffics in antisemitic rhetoric. “The DSA isn’t distancing itself from this kind of rhetoric. It’s elevating it,” Greenblatt wrote.
Despite the controversy, several DSA-endorsed candidates achieved success on election night, including Chris Rabb in Pennsylvania and Melat Kiros in Colorado, among others.
In a post-election commentary, Piker celebrated the Democratic wins, calling the outcome a “blue-clear apocalypse.” He suggested that Trumpism was declining and criticized the Republican party’s agenda.
Throughout the election cycle, Piker had engaged with political circles, interviewing and campaigning with DSA-backed candidates. This included working with Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan. Although El-Sayed’s campaign was not explicitly DSA-backed, the organization noted his support for DSA priorities like Medicare-for-all.
Piker has faced criticism for remarks about Jewish Americans and their support for Israel. In response, El-Sayed emphasized his commitment to Jewish safety and condemned rhetoric that endangers communities.
The DSA has not responded to requests for comment about the involvement of Hasan Piker in their election night coverage.
