At Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, Luka Dončić of the Lakers showcased his exceptional on-court awareness. However, an unusual incident involving a fan left both Dončić and others puzzled on Wednesday night.
During the third quarter of the Lakers’ 116-103 victory over the Kings, a loose ball ended up in the hands of a fan near the Lakers’ bench. The ball had come after a blocked shot by Jarred Vanderbilt. Lakers players and a referee indicated that the ball would be given to the Lakers. Despite this, a fan in a black jacket over a black t-shirt and jeans opted for a different action.
“He just tossed – really strong – the ball towards the ref,” Dončić commented. “I was just asking him what the hell is he doing?”
The fan expressed his misunderstanding by throwing a two-handed pass at referee Chelisa Painter. There was no physical harm; Painter managed the situation by bouncing the ball. Meanwhile, Dončić, pointing at the fan, seemed to question, “What are you doing?”
Another audience member captured a video of Dončić asking the errant fan, “What is wrong with you, man?” This footage highlights Dončić’s evident confusion following the incident.
Arena security responded quickly. They escorted the fan out of his seat with 2:35 left in the quarter. Once the situation was under control, the game resumed smoothly.
