Senior safety Kyle Keyser is enjoying popularity at St. Rita. He recently became class president, further increasing his reputation by convincing school officials to allow the wearing of crew necks. He expressed his leadership passion by saying, “I like to represent my school. St. Rita means the world to me.”
In a recent game, Keyser dazzled with a 50-yard touchdown return after intercepting the ball early in the game. However, St. Rita faced a 17-7 defeat against Downers Grove North in the Class 7A playoffs’ second round.
Senior cornerback Timmy Swanson also ended his high school career on a strong note. He managed an interception, a field-goal block, and a fumble recovery, contributing significantly to the team’s effort. Swanson’s active play was crucial in setting up Keyser’s interception.
Timmy’s role was to blow that play up and had an outstanding tackle on the ball carrier,” Keyser said. “The ball popped out right in my hands and I was off.
Swanson returned the favor during a fumble recovery in the fourth quarter. “Kyle was in there punching at it and I knew the ball was going to get out,” Swanson noted. “When it came out, I just jumped at it right away.”
Downers Grove North came into the game with a strong defense, allowing an average of only 7.5 points per game. Their defensive prowess was evident throughout the season, never conceding more than 18 points in a game. St. Rita’s offensive challenges increased when quarterback John Fennell dislocated his thumb, hindering their passing ability. This injury limited the first half to only 18 yards on 12 plays. Despite a spirited second-half start, their efforts fell short.
Brandon Johnson, Jr. carried the offensive load with 84 yards on 17 carries. Defensively, St. Rita held Downers Grove North to 17 points, matching their season low. Coach Martin Hopkins applauded Keyser and Swanson’s contributions. “We talked about setting the tone physically. They both fly around to the football, and that set the tone right off the bat,” Hopkins stated.
Hopkins also emphasized their leadership qualities. “Kyle has been a leader for three years on defense. He was part of the first group of kids here in my first year,” adding about Swanson, “Timmy is great on offense, defense, and special teams. He’s a dynamic athlete.” Both players are awaiting decisions in their recruiting processes.
Despite not returning to the state championship, the Mustangs remain proud of their season. After a 2-3 start, they claimed the Catholic League Green title and achieved a five-game winning streak. Reflecting on their underestimated journey, Keyser remarked, “We’re never projected to be the best. No one ever thinks we have a chance.” He expressed gratitude for his resilient teammates, adding, “I’ll forever be grateful to be a part of a team like that.”
