Trump Questions Midterm Vote Totals Amid Election Losses

1 hour ago 0

President Donald Trump expressed skepticism about the Democrats’ gains in the midterm elections through social media posts on Saturday. This comes after he stated his willingness to accept the election results, which led to Republican losses in Congress.

Trump shared content on Truth Social that questioned Democratic vote totals in various areas, including Texas. One post highlighted by Trump described the results in the Texas governor’s race as “Looney Tunes numbers.”

Trump’s Social Media Activity

On the night of the election, Trump had recognized the Republican losses and indicated he would accept the outcomes. Yet, he did not claim in any of the posts that the midterm results were fraudulent. Trump has not retracted his acknowledgment of the results.

Newsweek reached out to the White House and the Texas Secretary of State’s office for comments on Trump’s posts.

Trump Shares Post Calling Texas Midterm Numbers ‘Looney Tunes’

Among the shared material was a post by Donald Ward, who questioned the high Democratic turnout in Texas compared to perceived weak Republican participation. Ward noted that Republican Governor Greg Abbott increased his vote count by roughly 100,000 compared to 2022, yet he lost to Gina Hinojosa, who received significantly more votes.

Ward’s post pointed out that Hinojosa gained 1.7 million more votes than Democratic candidate Beto O’Rourke had previously. The post referred to this discrepancy as “Looney Tunes numbers” and argued that such enthusiasm should have resulted in long lines at polling stations.

Another shared post analyzed nationwide vote comparisons. Kevin Bass provided a chart contrasting the 2022 and projected 2026 House popular vote. It noted an unchanged Republican count while Democrats gained 20 million new votes. The chart clarified that the 2026 figures were projections based on partially counted votes.

Acceptance of Election Results

Trump’s posts came shortly after his earlier acceptance of the election outcome. Speaking to the New York Times on election night, Trump said he was ready to accept the results and work with Democrats.

Despite previous reservations, Trump lauded the Democrats’ campaign efforts to Fox News, acknowledging their success. His statement on Truth Social asserted that had he been on the ballot, victory would have been assured.

Election Results Impact

The midterm elections resulted in Democratic control of Congress, significantly impacting Trump’s standing. The results included Democratic wins in traditionally Republican areas, ending GOP dominance in Washington. Democrats have secured at least 54 Senate seats.

This development promoted significant administrative changes. Susie Wiles, White House Chief of Staff, is departing, with Stephen Miller stepping in as her successor. Some senior Justice Department officials have also announced their departures.

Voting Day Proceedings

The Associated Press reported that Election Day encountered minimal issues, primarily related to weather and equipment. Notable disruptions arose in New York’s Westchester County, where a programming update caused ballot scanner issues. Pennsylvania and North Carolina both faced technical challenges, leading to extended polling hours.

Trump’s posts raised questions about Democratic vote totals but stopped short of alleging fraud or irregularities. This shift signifies a considerable departure from his earlier, definitive acceptance of the election results just days prior.
