First lady Melania Trump revealed a $7.2 million scholarship fund at Louisiana State University (LSU) on Saturday. This initiative aims to support young individuals with foster care backgrounds. The announcement took place before LSU’s football game against Alabama.

Melania Trump attended the event wearing a Nour Hammour suede bomber jacket, an Adam Lippes skirt, and Manolo Blahnik BB pumps. Her appearance blended formality with a casual style suitable for a college football setting. The LSU campus was full of vibrant purple-and-gold clad supporters, and a large American flag adorned the stage inside Patrick F. Taylor Hall.

During her remarks, Trump was surrounded by LSU cheerleaders and the Tiger mascot, who presented her with the scholarship checks. Both sported ‘Be Best’ T-shirts, reflecting the name of her initiative.

The initiative, called “Fostering the Future,” is part of Trump’s larger “Be Best” program. It focuses on enhancing the educational opportunities for foster care youth.

The endowment combines a $5 million commitment from MMR Group, led by LSU alumnus James B. “Pepper” Rutland, and an additional $2.2 million from 75 LSU Foundation donors. Krista Raney, President of the LSU Foundation, said contributions have brought the fund to over $7.2 million. LSU President Wade Rousse highlighted the $5 million gift’s potential to generate around $200,000 annually, assisting students with tuition, fees, books, and other expenses.

To commemorate the occasion, Trump received various LSU-themed gifts. These included a personalized LSU jersey with the name “MELANIA” and the number 14, as well as a Tigers helmet featuring her ‘Be Best’ logo. Former LSU coach Ed Orgeron joined the ceremony, presenting a commemorative football crafted by Big Game USA. The event extended its impact with special patches on players’ jerseys, helmet decals, and themed cheerleader uniforms.

A special Melania Trump challenge coin was used for the ceremonial coin toss of the LSU-Alabama game. LSU Foundation President Krista Raney noted a friendly rivalry, mentioning LSU’s 14 scholarship recipients compared to Alabama’s nine.

This semester, 26 universities across the country support 100 Fostering the Future scholars. Trump emphasized the importance of recognizing these students alongside the athletes. Governor Jeff Landry and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise were present at the event. Additionally, Trump was gifted a wooden bowl crafted from a historic LSU oak tree limb, signifying the lasting impact of the program.

Trump reflected on the initiative’s goals, stating, “A great education does more than prepare someone for work life. It provides enduring value.” She closed the event with words of encouragement for the scholars, affirming her commitment to creating opportunities for them.
