Brooklyn Woman’s Murder: Suspect Arrested

47 minutes ago 0

A man is charged with murder following the death of a 28-year-old woman in Brooklyn, authorities revealed recently.

Katie Suarez was attacked while jogging on the Shore Parkway greenway in Brooklyn on the evening of October 30. Her father discovered her wounded on the path. She was taken to the hospital with a neck stab wound but succumbed to her injuries.

The NYPD announced the arrest of 27-year-old Sayed Mohassib from Brooklyn. He faces charges of second-degree murder, tampering with evidence, and weapon possession. Mohassib, wearing flip flops and a red jacket, did not respond to questions as police escorted him from the 62nd Precinct.

The events leading to Suarez’s murder are unclear. Police have not disclosed what connected Mohassib to the crime. Mohassib worked for the New York City Department of Education. He had been employed at PS 200 in Brooklyn and participated in NYPD field training in the Bronx from October to November 2022.

“The safety of our students is our top priority. We have suspended this individual and plan to terminate employment pending conviction results. We will support the NYPD investigation as necessary,” the Department of Education stated.

Mohassib’s employment has sparked concerns from elected officials. City Councilmember Kayla Santosuosso, State Sen. Andrew Gounardes, and Assemblymember-elect Chris McCreight commented on Mohassib’s mental health history. They noted his past as an ex-NYPD officer and former Marine discharged on psychiatric grounds. His employment at a public school, serving as a teacher’s aide, raises questions about his hiring.

Suarez’s death has shocked New Yorkers. Her family’s plea for justice added urgency to the NYPD’s search. Earlier this week, Suarez’s mother, Yasira, urged the suspect to come forward, expressing the family’s heartbreak.
