From Dog Rehab to a Business Venture: A Pilates Journey

50 minutes ago 0

Helping my dog, Weasel, regain his mobility through Pilates led me to start a new business. My 15-year-old golden retriever, Weasel, was struggling to walk in a straight line. This alarming change in his behavior marked the beginning of a new chapter for both of us.

Weasel’s Struggle with Mobility

Weasel had always been an active dog. Despite his age, he moved like a puppy. But one day, he seemed unable to walk straight. It was as if he were disoriented. My vet and a client, who is a surgical vet, suggested neurological tests. These indicated possible issues, and we moved towards preserving his remaining mobility.

Adapting Pilates for Weasel

Weasel had always been around at my Pilates studio. I realized that elements of his physiotherapy, like planking, could integrate with Pilates equipment. We used devices such as the reformer and the ladder barrel. His improvement was noticeable and rapid.

His progress inspired me to share our journey on Instagram. To my surprise, the videos gained significant attention, showing that others wanted to help their pets in similar ways.

Launching Pawlates 101

This interest sparked the creation of “Pawlates 101,” a Pilates class for pets. My first Zoom class drew participants worldwide. I demonstrated how simple household items could substitute specialist equipment. My sessions consistently attract a global audience, teaching them how to apply these methods.

Future Aspirations

The success of these sessions has been surprising and motivating. Many pet owners doubt the benefits of exercise for aging dogs. Encouraged by this initiative, I am exploring the development of an app. It would advise owners on helpful equipment and track vital aspects of pet care.

Weasel remains a key part of this venture—my ideal business partner. Together, we aim to change how pet owners view exercise and rehabilitation for their senior dogs.
