Glenbrook South’s Triumph Led by Henry Stephan

An extraordinary performance was required to halt East Aurora’s impressive journey, and Glenbrook South’s Henry Stephan rose to the occasion. Stephan, a senior forward, thrives under pressure. He feels more confident when the stakes are high.

“I love big games and playing before large audiences,” Stephan said. “The fans support me. The school and community are behind me, so I need to perform for them. I promised myself, ‘I will execute and do all I can to win this game.’”

On Saturday night, Stephan achieved this by scoring both goals in the Titans’ 2-1 victory over East Aurora in the Class 3A championship at Rockford Guilford, marking the program’s first state title. Zachary Narbert provided an assist, and Matthew Kattan made four saves for the Titans, who boast a record of 22-4-1.

Glenbrook South coach Reggie Lara was confident Stephan, who scored a decisive overtime goal in the Titans’ 2-1 semifinal win over Lockport on Friday, would lead the team to victory. “He loves big moments and crowds, whether supportive or not. That’s where he thrives,” Lara stated. “Seeing him shine at this stage is wonderful.”

Miguel Diaz scored for East Aurora, ending the season with the program’s first state trophy and a 15-7-3 record. Jeremie Bititi contributed an assist, and Carlos Fabela made three saves. Diaz scored in the 33rd minute, equalizing Stephan’s initial goal.

Despite the loss, Diaz won’t forget the remarkable season, recalling the program’s progress from never having clinched a sectional title to this breakthrough season. Diaz, a junior midfielder who led the team with nine goals, is among seven starters expected to return next season.

“Making school history is gratifying,” Diaz said. “I appreciate the community’s support. We aim to take it all next year.”

This season, Glenbrook South emerged victorious. Stephan ensured this outcome, even after briefly leaving the game with a head injury in the second half. “I was knocked out but returned hungrier. I wouldn’t let that moment ruin my career. I had to make a difference,” Stephan said.

Stephan secured the win with a shot from 20 yards, placing it in the top-right corner with 28:53 remaining. “I was fully confident in that shot, ignoring the pressure. It was likely my seventh game-winner this year,” he said.

The Titans made history with the championship win. “Winning the first championship means the world to the school,” Stephan said. “In my senior year, I knew the responsibility was mine. I was the one to make a difference.”
