Christopher Atkins Reflects on Sobriety and Family Life

2 hours ago 0

Christopher Atkins, known for his role with Brooke Shields in “The Blue Lagoon” (1980), shared how fatherhood motivated him to quit alcohol. Now, decades later, his grandchildren reinforce his commitment to sobriety.

In an interview with Fox News Digital at the Chiller Theatre Expo, Atkins revealed the impact of his children on his life decisions.

Having kids made me want to be a dad more than a drunk, Atkins stated.

He has maintained sobriety for nearly 40 years, despite facing personal changes like divorce. Becoming a grandfather has only strengthened his resolve to avoid alcohol.

Atkins shares two children, Grant and Brittney, with his ex-wife, Lyn Barron Weber. Reflecting on his career, Atkins noted how alcohol once affected his opportunities, including being considered for the lead in “Footloose.” Heavy drinking at the time cost him the role, which went to Kevin Bacon.

After “The Blue Lagoon,” fame was challenging. “I never aimed for a career in acting,” Atkins explained. Originally a model, he attended an open casting call for the film. Its success was overwhelming, leading to worldwide recognition.

Now, more than 40 years later, Atkins has transitioned to a quieter life on the East Coast. He moved from California to Connecticut, closer to his family’s new home in North Carolina. This decision followed the deaths of his father and stepfather and his mother’s health issues.

Passionate about outdoor activities, such as fishing, hiking, and woodworking, Atkins expressed interest in crafting with wood and epoxy. Looking forward, he intends to tackle a segment of the Appalachian Trail, despite undergoing several surgeries, including shoulder and elbow replacements and other procedures.

Staying active is crucial for him. Physical activity is key to keeping more metal out of your body, he said.
