In Krakow, Poland, a tragic event unfolded, prompting two days of national mourning. A 24-year-old man with far-right sympathies drove into a bustling square and opened fire. This attack claimed six lives and injured 15 more before police managed to shoot and wound him.

The incident, described by Poland’s defense minister as an “act of terror,” occurred on Saturday in Main Square, Krakow’s central tourist hub. Authorities reopened the square Sunday evening, where mourners gathered, leaving flowers and candles to honor the victims.

St. Mary’s Trumpet Call, traditionally played hourly, was paused overnight for the first time since World War II. By Sunday afternoon, Krakow’s St. Anne’s Church was filled with mourners attending a memorial service.

Additionally, the suspect’s family members were found dead at their home in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski. Authorities believe they were also gunshot victims.

Witness Accounts and Reactions

Witnesses shared harrowing accounts. Marie-Ange Collaer, on a trip from Brussels, described the chaos and fear on Facebook. “We literally ran for our lives,” she wrote. “Lying on the floor in a shop like in a bad police movie whilst you hear bullets everywhere.”

Neil Thaxton from the UK and his wife found refuge in a shop, initially mistaking gunshots for fireworks. “We thought it was fireworks then people started running,” he posted.

Another tourist, Alexandros Maronitis from Greece, shared his fear after witnessing the attack. Unable to return to his lodgings for hours, Maronitis noted, “We’re a bit afraid. It’s our first time in Poland. We heard it’s a safe country.”

American tourist Marylin Green mourned the losses in the “beautiful city,” visiting Poland for the first time. “I’m Polish, my parents were from here,” she said.

Heroic Police Response

A video on social media revealed the police officer’s brave actions, shooting the attacker and later collapsing. Authorities praised the officers for their heroic deeds. Both officers are in the hospital but conscious.

Krzysztof Jan Klęczar, the Malopolska regional governor, affirmed the importance of these officers’ intervention, which likely prevented further casualties.

Surgeons Michał Pędziwiatr and Mateusz Wierdak also assisted, with Wierdak helping a wounded officer. “This probably saved his life,” Pędziwiatr said.

Investigation and Community Impact

Prosecutors launched an investigation into the murder and attempted murder, deeming the act a terrorist offense. The deceased included four Poles, a Brit, and an Austrian. Five foreigners were among the injured.

The suspect’s sibling, a student at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts, was confirmed dead. The academy mourned Magdalena Oksińska, a talented artist, whose untimely death is a significant cultural loss.

Implications of Recent Violence

Poland’s interior minister, Marcin Kierwiński, highlighted the shooter’s far-right ideologies. Weapons seized from his family home and statements from local officials reflect rising interests in gun ownership.

Mass shootings are rare in Poland, yet recent incidents, including attacks in Mazovia, have raised concerns. Officials attribute these acts to online influences glorifying violence.

The suspect’s attire mirrored that of other far-right attackers in Europe. Kacper Rekawek from the International Center for Counterterrorism noted, “Now we can say that these kinds of attacks have become successful in Poland.”
