Florida Officials Respond to Fatal Alligator Attack

1 hour ago 0

Authorities in Florida captured and killed an alligator after it attacked and killed 71-year-old Steven Hamilton. Hamilton was fishing in Winter Garden when the incident occurred. This marks the second deadly alligator attack in the state this year. Local police emphasize the importance of respecting wildlife and maintaining a safe distance.

Recently released 911 calls reveal the chaotic aftermath of another alligator attack affecting a different individual. Dina Spann, 58, survived her encounter but suffered severe injuries while swimming in Florida’s Silver River in Marion County. She lost her right arm below the elbow and part of a finger on her left hand.

Audio from the calls, obtained by The New York Post, highlights the urgency and panic during the incident. One caller described Spann’s injuries, noting her arm was dangling and partially lost. Another call captured the distress of witnesses as the situation unfolded on the Silver River.

“Her arm is gone,” reported a second 911 caller.

Fox News Digital detailed the attack. Spann’s son, Zach Guerrina, recounted his mother’s attempt to keep the alligator’s jaws at bay. “It had her, but she said she was trying to make sure it didn’t get to her legs,” he shared.

John Gamache, a park visitor, described the scene to FOX 35 Orlando. He witnessed the alligator advancing rapidly toward swimmers and took action by heading toward them in his boat. Gamache noted the severity of the injury, seeing exposed bones and blood.

Spann was hospitalized and later reported to be in good spirits upon her return home. Her family expressed gratitude to Gamache for his assistance.

This is not the lone alligator encounter this year. A child also sustained non-life-threatening injuries from an alligator bite while swimming in an off-limits area. Florida, home to numerous alligators, frequently sees these animals in its freshwater habitats. Authorities continue to urge caution to reduce further incidents.
