Representative Tom Suozzi of Long Island, New York, advises Democrats against hastily impeaching President Trump, labeling it a futile effort that risks alienating voters. “Democrats must not squander this opportunity. They have won. Now what?” Suozzi remarked during a radio interview on “Cats Roundtable.”
With new majorities, Democrats aim to investigate various Trump administration activities. Issues include the handling of Jeffrey Epstein files, Trump’s family business operations, the White House ballroom project, and policies on the Iran conflict. Suozzi, who was victorious at the Nassau County Democratic Committee’s election night event, emphasized the party’s enhanced subpoena powers for examining alleged abuses and corruption, possibly laying the groundwork for a third Trump impeachment trial.
Suozzi stresses prioritizing issues like affordability and economic challenges over impeachment. “Spend 75% of your time on affordability and solving real problems. Use 25% for oversight duties,” he advised. “Rushing to impeachment would be a mistake. Focus on issues impacting people’s lives,” Suozzi continued.
He advocates for bipartisan solutions and warns against pressure from the party’s progressive wing to push leftward. “We are capitalists, not socialists. We seek safety, not lawlessness. We are mainstream, not extreme. We take pride, not shame, in America,” he stated, advocating a return to the party’s working-class roots and addressing middle-class needs.
Suozzi also supports House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries for the Speaker role, cautioning against opposition from progressives. “Hakeem Jeffries is a competent and talented leader. I support him,” he stated, suggesting that shared New York ties among Jeffries, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and Trump could benefit the state.
He emphasized collaboration beyond political divides, mentioning Trump’s past contributions to his campaign during his time as Nassau County executive. Suozzi underscored, “It’s not red versus blue. It’s red, white, and blue.”
President Trump previously indicated that a GOP loss in the midterms could lead to his impeachment, though following Democratic victories, he expressed no concern. Trump remarked that such moves could “destroy the Democrat Party,” according to his statement to the Washington Examiner.
