Trump and DOJ Settle $10 Billion Lawsuit Over Tax Returns

1 month ago 0

The Justice Department and former President Donald Trump have settled a significant lawsuit involving the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Treasury Department. Documents submitted to the court Monday reveal the terms of the settlement regarding Trump’s $10 billion lawsuit. The legal action accused these agencies of illegitimate actions allowing a government contractor to leak Donald Trump’s tax returns along with those of his sons and his company.

The lawsuit was initiated in January, filed in Trump’s personal capacity in Miami federal court. Allegations claimed improper management led to the public disclosure of tax returns by media outlets in 2020. Eric Trump, Donald Trump Jr., and the Trump Organization are included as plaintiffs.

A spokesperson for the Justice Department and Trump’s legal representatives did not immediately address inquiries about the settlement’s specifics. However, last week, ABC News indicated the suit might be withdrawn in exchange for establishing a fund exceeding $1.7 billion. This fund would cater to Trump allies claiming unlawful targeting by the Biden administration.

A representative from Trump’s legal team stated that the IRS permitted a politically motivated employee to leak sensitive information concerning President Trump, his family, and the Trump Organization to media like the New York Times and ProPublica. This information was subsequently made public illegally, affecting millions. President Trump aims to ensure accountability for those infringing upon Americans’ rights.

In an April court filing, both parties requested extended deadlines as they seek resolutions without prolonged litigation. Melissa Quinn provided additional insights on this report.
